If you’re a provider, therapist, or simply someone curious about the transformative power of the nervous system, Safe and Sound offers both inspiration and practical insight. This much-anticipated book delves into the real-world applications of the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP), a listening intervention developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, grounded in Polyvagal Theory.

One of the most valuable aspects of this book is the breadth of case studies. Rather than presenting only the most dramatic or “feel-good” success stories, the authors intentionally showcase a spectrum of experiences. Some individuals experienced profound changes, while others had more subtle but meaningful shifts. Some journeys were fairly straightforward, while others were far more complex - just like real life.

There’s a rich diversity in the way SSP was delivered across the case studies:

  • In-person and remote
  • With children, teens, and adults
  • Integrated with bodywork, movement, psychotherapy, and other modalities
  • Paired with other tools such as Somatic Experiencing, and neurofeedback

Practitioners from a wide range of disciplines contributed - from social workers and psychologists to occupational therapists, naturopathic doctors, and more. The client populations and presenting concerns were equally varied and reflect the growing awareness of how deeply the nervous system shapes our ability to heal.

Among the many conditions addressed were:

  • PANS/PANDAS
  • POTS
  • Trauma & PTSD
  • Chronic fatigue
  • IBS
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Medically unexplained symptoms (MUS)
  • Auditory & visual hallucinations
  • Dissociative identity disorder (DID)
  • Grief
  • Perfectionism
  • Disordered eating
  • Bipolar type 2
  • Sugar addiction
  • Sleep issues
  • Gender identity related concerns
  • Addiction recovery
  • COVID recovery
  • Parkinson’s disease.

One particularly compelling case included measurable changes in brainwave activity - before and after SSP - illustrating just how tangible the shifts can be, even in ways that go beyond subjective reports.

As someone who has offered SSP to at least several hundred clients—most of whom are highly sensitive or complex—I’m no stranger to watching what feel like miracles unfold on a regular basis. To an extent, profound shifts just become part of the rhythm of the work. And still… this book moved me. I found myself inspired, and at times, even amazed.

The book beautifully demonstrates that SSP is not a “one-size-fits-all” tool but a nuanced process that can be titrated, adapted, and integrated to meet the needs of each unique nervous system. And it shows - equally beautifully - that there are many different wonderful ways of offering it.

Safe and Sound is also incredibly easy to read - or to listen to as an audiobook if you prefer. The language strikes a beautiful balance: it’s informative and grounded in science, yet remains completely accessible to those without a clinical background. Whether you’re a curious parent, a therapist, or someone on your own healing journey, you won’t get lost in jargon. It’s written in a way that welcomes you in.

Whether you’re new to the idea of SSP and wondering about it for yourself, or you’re a seasoned provider who lives and breathes this work, Safe and Sound is a must-read. It bridges the gap between theory and lived experience in a way that is both accessible and deeply moving.

The stories in Safe and Sound are as varied as the nervous systems they support. Did one surprise you? Move you? I’d love to hear your thoughts—whether you’re offering SSP or exploring it for yourself.
